Advancing our future
Pretoria Boys High School has identified ten key projects not only to ensure our pupils exceed their educational potential, but enhance, broaden and secure the sustainability of our estate.
These include building a new Innovation Centre to foster creativity and critical thinking, replacing outdated, prefabricated classrooms with modern facilities, providing financial support for deserving students from an under-resourced background, and supporting the Bush School for hands-on environmental education.

Deserving Talent – Our Scholarship Programme
PBHS is dedicated to providing world-class education that develops well-rounded, principled young men ready to lead to every sphere of life. While we offer a holistic, high-quality education at a fraction of private school costs, the reality is that for many South Africans, the school remains out of reach.
Through the Scholarship Programme, talented boys with financial need are given the chance to thrive academically, culturally and personally within an environment that nurtures excellence. The programme supports over 120 boys, representing a total investment of R12 million, made possible through the generosity of foundations, corporates and individuals who believe in equal opportunity.
For corporate partners, this is an opportunity to make a tangible and visible contribution to education and youth development while strengthening brand reputation and demonstrating authentic social impact. Partnerships over measurable outcomes, strong brand association with one of South Africa’s most respected schools, and meaningful stories that reflect genuine corporate purpose.
Your investment in a boy’s education is an investment in South Africa’s future, shaping leaders, professionals and citizens who will build a stronger nation.
The Hall of Fame Legacy Project
The Pretorian Trust – established in 1975, serves as a Public Benefit Organisation dedicated to supporting PBHS by managing and disbursing donated funds for purposes including bursaries and infrastructure development.
Currently, the Trust is focusing on the “Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders, Today” initiative, which aims to provide financial assistance to talented boys of diverse backgrounds who lack the financial means to attend PBHS, giving them access to a world class education. This vision seeks to enable these young men to develop their academic and extracurricular talents, and to ultimately pursue tertiary education and careers of their choice.

Access to Excellence
At Pretoria Boys High School, we are committed to ensuring that every pupil, regardless of their financial background, has the tools they need to succeed and feel integrated into our school community. This includes pupils allocated to PBHS by the Gauteng Department of Education in terms of their admissions policy, who may face financial challenges.
While these pupils are given the opportunity to attend, the school must take on the financial responsibility as the state is unable to fully cover the associated costs, which for 2025 is estimated to be in the region of R8 million.
We are seeking support to cover expenses such as tuition fees, academic excursions, sports tours, and other essential resources, ensuring that each boy not only has the means to excel academically but also feels valued and empowered. Your contribution helps foster an environment where all boys can thrive and become active participants in our vibrant school community.
As a donor, you may benefit from tax deductions and B-BBEE benefits for your company, making your support even more impactful. By investing in the education of these boys, you help ensure a bright future for them and contribute to the ongoing success of our school.
Preserving the Bush School tradition
We take great pride in our Bush School, an immersive three-week educational experience that allows boys to connect with nature, develop essential life skills, and gain a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship. For years, the Bush School has provided pupils with invaluable hands-on learning opportunities in an extraordinary outdoor setting that can’t be replicated in the classroom.
In addition to academic growth, the Bush School fosters leadership, teamwork, and self-reliance. By spending time in nature, far from the luxuries of modern life, boys gain a unique perspective on the world around them. Through hiking, survival skills, and outdoor challenges, they learn how to navigate difficult situations, build confidence, and form lasting bonds with their peers. These experiences shape future leaders who understand the importance of hard work, perseverance, and environmental responsibility. However, rising costs and government regulations and requirements are making it more challenging to keep this extraordinary experience accessible to our pupils.
To ensure the future of the Bush School, we need to raise R5 million annually. By supporting the Bush School, you are investing in the future of our pupils and contributing to an education that encourages curiosity, creativity, environmental awareness, and personal growth. The lessons learned here go beyond the academic programme—they shape the character of our boys and prepare them for leadership in the real world.
Academic Programmes
For generations, Pretoria Boys High School has been one of South Africa’s leading institutions in Mathematics and Advanced Programme Mathematics. More than a subject, Mathematics at our school fosters precision, perseverance, and problem-solving, shaping young minds into innovators and leaders.
Our Further Studies Programme, quality-assured by Stellenbosch University’s Unit for International Credentialing (SU-UIC) and benchmarked internationally by UK ENIC—continues to deliver exceptional results in the Final International Senior Certificate examinations. Learners complete rigorous modules such as Calculus and Algebra, with Statistics as an elective, while Further Studies Physics offers an additional pathway that prepares them to excel nationally and internationally.
Maintaining this standard requires significant investment. With the redirection of support from a longstanding benefactor, we now face an annual shortfall of R1.2 million. These funds have been essential for:
- Keeping mathematics classes small (fewer than 25 pupils)
- Employing additional teachers and updating resources, technology, and software
- Supporting ongoing teacher development
- Offering tutoring, enrichment workshops, and access to national and international mathematics events
This investment benefits more than 1,500 pupils each year, ensuring South Africa continues to develop world-class mathematicians, engineers, scientists, and problem-solvers.
Supporting this programme means sustaining a tradition of excellence that strengthens our school and our country. By contributing, you help shape the next generation of thinkers and leaders, leaving a lasting legacy in South Africa and beyond.
Innovation Centre
The Robotics and Innovation Centre at Pretoria Boys High School will be a hub for pioneering the next generation of technological education and advancement. Through hands-on learning, the centre will inspire and empower pupils in robotics, coding, and beyond, fostering creativity and innovation. The facility will accommodate 160 pupils across five cutting-edge technology labs and collaborative spaces.
Key features of the Innovation Centre include:
- Two computer labs (30 pupils each), equipped with folding, stackable, sound-proof dividers that can convert the space into one teaching venue
- Robotics lab (30 pupils), dedicated to STEM subjects and collaboration with the latest technologies.
- Terraced auditorium, with seating for 100.
- Focused project breakaway room
The estimated cost for this transformative project is R10 million. Your support will help bring this vision to life and provide pupils with the tools to excel in an ever-evolving technological world.
Swimming Pool Refurbishment
The swimming pool at Pretoria Boys High School has stood at the heart of our red-brick campus for more than 35 years. It has been far more than a facility: it has been a training ground for countless swimmers, the home of the iconic inter-house gala, a venue for inter-school competitions, a place of joy during summer lessons, and a hub for discipline, teamwork, and growth.
Time, however, has left its mark. The tiled surface of the pool has cracked and degraded, causing water loss requiring constant topping-up. This not only wastes a vital natural resource but also risks the structural integrity of the pool and escalates ongoing maintenance costs. In addition, the pool’s pumps, filters and reticulation have also aged and require upgrading to ensure that the pool’s water clarity and cleanliness are sustained.
Following consultation with engineers and refurbishment specialists, it has been determined that the only sustainable solution is a complete resurfacing of the pool and a complete upgrade of its water filtering system. This project will restore the pool’s structural strength, ensure its safety, and extend its life for the next generation.
This refurbishment is not simply a matter of repair. It is an investment in preserving a central part of the school’s sporting and educational life. A fully functional pool will continue to:
- Support swimming as a vital life skill.
- Provide opportunities for competitive training and aquatics excellence.
- Sustain the tradition of inter-house and inter-school galas.
- Promote health, fitness, and discipline across the school community.
- By restoring the pool, Pretoria Boys High safeguards a facility that has shaped the lives of generations and ensures it will continue to do so for decades to come.
Estimated Cost: R3 million
1. Saving Loch Armstrong
Excavated in 1986, the School Lake – now fondly known as Loch Armstrong – was created in honour of Headmaster, Errol Malcolm Armstrong, who led Pretoria Boys High from 1974 to 1987. An avid lover of nature and the outdoors, Mr Armstong proposed the creation of the School’s lake – a tranquil retreat and natural habitat at the heart of the campus. Over the years, it has become a home for Guinea Fowl, Cormorants, Egyptian Geese, Spurwing Geese, Fulvous Ducks, White-Faced Whistling Ducks and several other water fowl.
Loch Armstrong is more than just a body of water – it is a symbol of visionary leadership, community spirit, and our deep connection to nature. Over the years, it has become a serene gathering place, a sanctuary for wildlife, and a cherished part of the school’s heritage. Today, as time and the elements have taken their toll, we are launching an initiative to preserve and revitalise Loch Armstrong thereby ensuring that future generations of boys can enjoy its peace, purpose, and history. With your support, we can protect this living legacy and honour the values it represents.
We are now at a pivotal point. To preserve this cherished landmark and realise its full educational potential, urgent ecological rehabilitation is needed. Our goal is not only to restore the Loch’s natural beauty and balance, but to transform it into a vibrant living classroom and environmental resource for our boys. This restoration would support curriculum enrichment in Natural and Physical Sciences, Geography and Conservation, while fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment for all those who visit the area.
Estimated Cost: R1 million and additional R100k p/a for maintenance
2. Upgrading pre-fabricated classrooms
Replacing all our pre-fabricated classrooms is a key priority in our development plan. Due to the financial constraints faced by the state, the responsibility for maintaining and replacing these classrooms falls on the school. While the existing classrooms have been carefully maintained to ensure safety, upgrading these aging facilities will create a more conducive and modern learning environment for our pupils.
Work required:
- Safe removal of the current pre-fabricated classrooms.
- Construction of 20 new brick classrooms to replace the outdated structures.
Estimated cost: R25 million
By supporting this project, you are helping us provide a modern, lasting and more effective learning space that will better serve the educational needs of our boys.
9. Boarding Houses Solar Project
Pretoria Boys High School is launching an exciting sustainability initiative to safeguard our boarding houses against South Africa’s ongoing electricity challenges. The Lighting the Future project aims to install a 120 kWp solar power and 240 kWh battery storage system, ensuring our boarders enjoy uninterrupted power, lower running costs, and a reduced carbon footprint.
