Weekly performances and concerts further enrich the vibrant musical culture at PBHS.
Groups and ensembles include: Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Big Band, Dixie Band, Brass Choir, Flute Choir, Harmonics A Capella, Salon Boys, Jazz Band, Junior Jazz Band, Trombone Quartet, Saxophone Quartet, Cello Ensemble, Clarinet Ensemble, Guitar Quartet and String Quartet.
Aspects that sets us apart
- Our practical and academic curriculum extends well beyond what is expected on national level. At Grade 12-level most of our boys have achieved their Grade 8 practical qualification. Given the above, the level of playing at PBHS is extremely high, even though most of our pupils only take up music in Grade 8.
- Each subject music boy receives one lesson and one accompaniment lesson per week. This extra attention makes all the difference in their practical progress. It is worth noting that taking subject music does not incur lesson fees, this is included in the tuition.
- All our boys receive ample performance opportunities by playing quarterly practical exams as well as regularly participating in Form concerts.
- Joining one of the groups/ensembles provides our boys with fantastic performance opportunities. Highlights from the recent past include overseas and national tours, Lunch hour concerts at UP, performances for SuperSport, the Kolisi Foundation, showcase performances at school (Café Concert series as well as Four Schools series) and charity drives like our Busking for Lives initiative and performances at Daybreak House for babies.
- PBHS stages a Musical every second year. This year we did Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a proper Broadway level musical. The cast and orchestra consisted entirely of PBHS musicians.
- Boys are also afforded the opportunity to enter for external examinations through the Royal Schools of Music.
At Boys’ High we believe that if something is worth doing it is worth doing passionately, and the music department certainly strives to do just that.
