Social Outreach Society
Small Acts, Big Impact

If there’s one group in this school that believes in kindness without applause, it’s our Social Outreach Society. Every Wednesday and Friday, they go quietly about their work, spending time with the elderly and vulnerable children.

Started in 2002 by Mrs Penny Vlag, the aim of the society was not recognition for any of their acts, but doing small things for those in need, simply because it matters. A quick visit, a game of scrabble, a donation of toys or stationery—these small gestures can mean the world to some. For the elderly, it might be just having someone to talk to. For kids without families, it’s knowing someone actually cares.

Recently the Society opened up the Karri App to donations and they managed to raise a whopping R29 500 which they spent on additional stationery at PNA. Because of the support and altruism showed by the Boys High community, the Society was able to assist two additional charities.

Sometimes the people who need us most are the ones we forget first—kids in orphanages and seniors in care homes. They’re often out of sight, but they should never be out of mind. Some of the charities that are ‘seen’ and supported by our boys are Bramley Children’s Home and Princess Christian Home for the Aged, Kingdom Life Youth Center, Kungwini Welfare Organisation, Dynamic Women for Children, and recently, The Louis Botha Children’s Home, Tshwane Haven and Paul Kruger Children’s Home.

The aim of the society is to make them they feel seen, heard, and loved. You don’t need to do everything. Just do something. A little time, a little heart—it goes a long way.
