Pretoria Boys High School marked another memorable Founders Day weekend, bringing together generations of Boys High men, families, staff and friends in a fitting celebration of 125 years of tradition, brotherhood and excellence.
Festivities began on Friday morning with the annual Founder’s Day Assembly, a cherished occasion that welcomed more than 500 Old Boys back to the School on the Hill. The gathering celebrated the enduring spirit of Boys High and the bonds that unite generations of men who have called the school home.
The keynote address was delivered by Mashao Mukhari, Head Prefect of 2015, who reflected on the profound impact the school has had on countless lives. In a moving tribute to his alma mater, he remarked:
“In a world of change, this great institution has remained a constant; an anchor for society – preventing it from drifting.”
His words resonated deeply with those in attendance and set the tone for a weekend centred on heritage, fellowship and pride in the red, white and green.
On Friday evening, reunion dinners were held in different locations as Old Boys from across the decades reconnected, shared stories and celebrated the lifelong friendships forged during their time at Boys High. All the way from our youngest 10 Year On group up to a small 70 Year On group, the ‘boys’ had a spectacular evening catching up with some of their oldest friends.
The celebrations continued on Saturday with a full programme of sport against long-standing rivals, Jeppe High School for Boys. One of the oldest fixtures in South African schoolboy sport, the encounter once again showcased the fierce competitiveness and mutual respect that have characterised this historic rivalry. The First Team Rugby match was an absolute nail-biter, and our boys came out at the top (37-33). Jeppe was at their finest on the hockey astro though, and their team scored a well-deserved 4 – 1.
A highlight of the weekend was the annual Old Boys Dinner, one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the country. Approximately 1 200 guests came together to at the University of Pretoria to celebrate the school’s rich heritage and to honour the generations of men who have contributed to the legacy of Pretoria Boys High School.
As the school continues to celebrate its milestone 125th anniversary year, Founders Day once again demonstrated the strength of the Boys High brotherhood and the special place the school holds in the hearts of those who have walked its corridors.
To all who returned to the School on the Hill, thank you for making this year’s Founders Day such a special occasion. Here’s to our history, our traditions and the generations of Boys High men still to come.
